Border Update 03-04-2025

So today we are waiting to hear the State of the Union. Don’t we already know the damage, humiliation and outrage that this country is already feeling? Haven’t we been reading or watching the news?

We have to take pride in resisting the current State of the Union.  The photos above were from a recent student rally held in Grant County led by Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA), a student organization at WNMU. At least 100 students and community members marched through downtown Silver City protesting the treatment of immigrants who are their families and friends.

While the border is as quiet as it has ever been (except for military deployments), ICE is active all over the country trying to fill the quotas of detainees that Trump and his henchman (and women) are demanding.

Our Border Justice Project has been working with SC Indivisible printing and posting more Know Your Rights posters and distributing the RED CARDS above. We have also given some assistance to a group doing Search and Rescue. There is so little we can do individually to protect our neighbors, but our state legislature can and is working to close loopholes and guarantee safety to everyone.

If you are in or close to Silver City, you once again have the opportunity to see the artwork of Alvaro Enciso. His crosses in the desert commemorating lives lost continue to inspire.

And finally, here are three recent articles that held my attention and we should watch closely:
State, Federal Policies Escalate Attacks on Immigrant Children

The Trump Administration’s Registration Requirement for Immigrants

If you have made, or continue to make financial contributions to our Border Justice Project, we will maintain and disburse those funds to serve the same populations we originally committed to in Deming and Palomas, and more recently at other points in southern NM. I will continue writing emails as we know more.

You may go to Border Justice Donation, or you can mail checks made out to UUFSC (Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City) with ‘Border’ in the memo line to UUFSC, PO Box 4034, Silver City, NM 88062
