Border Update 10-29-2024

Hard to believe the election is just one week away. Seems like it’s been forever and the next week (or so) will probably feel the same way. But there is a lot to share. Especially that we will be having TWO collections in November.

The first will be our regular collection on Wednesday, November 6th, for the Deming shelter with more info about that below.

The second will be a Giving Day for Border Partners (https://borderpartners.org/) with whom we have cooperated for years. They work diligently and enthusiastically in the town of Palomas to improve the lives and culture of their neighbors. It will be on Sunday, November 10th, from 12-2 in the UU Fellowship parking lot. Again, more info below.

At the last monthly collection, our local Future Forge presented us with a very generous donation for the BJP! Unbeknownst to us they organized a fundraiser at their September Makers Market in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. They “chose to dedicate this event to supporting a cause that aligns with our values of inclusivity, justice and solidarity.” Thank you to Future Forge and all of you that participated!

In my last email, which I wrote the day after the September presidential debate, I asked this question, “what is the first meaningful piece of immigration legislation that Congress could pass and President Harris could sign?” I got lots of interesting responses, none of which should be ignored.
–several focused on more agents and translators to quickly process asylum claims at the borders
–several advocated for citizenship for all dreamers as well as amnesty and a path to citizenship for undocumented persons
–work visas!
–give back belts, shoelaces and rosaries
–end the filibuster
–allow foreign college grads to stay in the US with legal work permits and a pathway to citizenship
–AND my personal favorite…Get rid of “the aisle”. Make everyone in Congress sit alphabetically. We expect first graders to be nice to their neighbors and should expect no less from our legislators.
Lastly…
OUR NEXT COLLECTION IS WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6th, from 3:00 to 3:30.

DEMING is hoping to open their motel model before the end of 2024 and they need cleaning supplies: Fabuloso, bleach, 13 gallon trash bags, contractor size bags, sponges, dish soap, industrial mop heads, toilet paper, paper towels, Lysol spray, laundry soap, and dryer sheets. They also are requesting hoodies (all sizes), coats (6 months and up), deodorant, body wash, shampoo and conditioner.

For our GoBags we always need CRACKER PACKS, GRANOLA BARS, WELCH’S FRUIT SNACKS and small cans of VIENNA SAUSAGES…along with GALLON SIZE ZIPLOCK BAGS to pack them in. Until Deming’s motel model is ready we are sending GoBags to Border Servant Corps in Las Cruces. They are the largest NM Welcome Center for asylum seekers.

We collect donations on the FIRST Wednesday of each month, 3:00-3:30, at the UUFSC building, 3845 N Swan (not our mailing address) in Silver City. You can drive straight down on either side of our collection vehicles. We will get you unloaded and then you can drive out easily. If you are bringing any of the above GoBag items, please let the crew unloading your car know about them.

Our BORDER PARTNERS collection on 11/10 will be gardening/farming equipment, constructions tools, plumbing supplies, electrical supplies, woodworking tools, metal working tools and computers. I have a very complete list of specific requests! Let me know if you’d like the complete list. I’ll also be sending a reminder for this collection, a week ahead of time with all needed items.
