Border Update 4-24-2024

Next Sunday, April 28th, Ron and I will be at the UU Westside Congregation in Rio Rancho at 11:00, giving a presentation about our Border Justice Project. Their congregation is a solid supporter of our project. If you live anywhere near there we would love to see you and put your name and face together. The address is 1650 Abrazo Rd NE, Rio Rancho NM. The program title is “The Evolution of a Local Border Justice Program.” Hopefully you’ll see the effects of all the border policy changes on Deming and Palomas over the past 5 years. We’ll also be at the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos on May 12th (more info on that in my next email).

The Grant County Community Foundation is again sponsoring Give Grandly, celebrating and helping 65 non-profits raise awareness and funding in our community. The UUFSC Border Justice Project is participating again. HOWEVER with a new twist! A very generous sponsor will be matching all donations dollar for dollar. We are a 501(c)3 tax deductible nonprofit.  The online campaign started on Saturday and runs through May 20th. And on Saturday May 4th from 9-2, Give Grandly will be a wonderful lively event in downtown Silver City at the Main Street Plaza, with booths for every organization plus music, entertainment, food and drink. Please come by our booth and say hello! Our Border Justice Project will be in Booth #25. We’ll have lots of photos to share with you and we’ll try to answer questions you may have. There will  also be an activity for children: making WELCOME cards for families who are entering the United States for the first time. For those of you who live too far away or have other commitments, here’s the link you can use until May 20th. https://www.givegrandly.org/organizations/unitarian-universalist-fellowship-of-silver-city. You can learn more about our story, and donating is easy. In fact, no matter how you donate to BJP until May 20th, it will count for Give Grandly! You can even hand me a $20 on the street corner… Please share this post with friends. Our whole project is built on trust. We trust the people on the ground who do the daily work, and we hope that you trust us.
IN ADDITION, we are having a special fundraiser event at Light Art Space on Broadway in downtown Silver City. It started with a donation of this pot by Juan Quezada Jr. and two others, from the estate of our own Fran Browne, and then grew. Starting Thursday May 2nd, there will be a display in the front window of Karen’s gallery, of 17 pots from Mata Ortiz, Mexico. They are all for sale until June 2nd to benefit our Border Justice Project as a part of Give Grandly. It will also be part of First Friday festivities on May 3rd from 5-7 pm. We will be there to talk about our BJP and Claude Smith will be there to talk about the pottery. And now…
