Border Update 9-11-2024

I’m sure many of you watched last night’s debate. This week we’re on the north shore of Lake Superior and my day dawned much brighter because of what I saw and heard.

Of course we need to hear more from Harris about true immigration/border reform. However, the reality along the border is that the number of asylum seekers entering the country is way, way down, no matter how the Republicans frame it. Deming continues to be in a holding pattern for sheltering. THEREFORE WE ARE GOING TO BE DOING OUR COLLECTIONS ONLY ON THE FIRST WEDNESDAYS OF EACH MONTH UNTIL THINGS CHANGE. Watch for my emails about a week ahead of that. This serves as your reminder for our October collection. There will not be a collection on September 18th.

OUR NEXT COLLECTION WILL BE WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 2nd.

Back to last night. I was glad the candidates weren’t asked what they would do on day one. Hopefully, she’ll get to sleep in. But we’ll all be watching for early actions from Congress and the president on many fronts. What would YOU like to see as the first action on immigration and the border? I’m not just asking rhetorically. What is the first meaningful piece of legislation that Congress could pass and President Harris could sign? (Three sentences or less!) I’ll pass on all your ideas in my email preceding our November collection.

Lastly…
OUR NEXT COLLECTION IS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2nd, from 3:00 to 3:30.

We continue to collect clean recycled water bottles in any size for Search and Rescue groups on the US side of the border.

For DEMING we continue to collect FOR BABIES:  FORMULA, BABY BOTTLES, PACIFIERS and SIPPY CUPS. SIZE 5-6-7 DIAPERS, DIAPER RASH CREAM and WIPES. Also, BODY LOTION, SHAMPOO, CONDITIONER. Winter jackets will also soon be needed for all ages.

For our GoBags we need CRACKER PACKS, GRANOLA BARS, WELCH’S FRUIT SNACKS and small cans of VIENNA SAUSAGES…along with GALLON SIZE ZIPLOCK BAGS to pack them in.

We collect donations on the FIRST Wednesday of each month, 3:00-3:30, at the UUFSC building, 3845 N Swan (not our mailing address) in Silver City. You can drive straight down on either side of our collection vehicles. We will get you unloaded and then you can drive out easily. If you are bringing any of the above GoBag items, please let the crew unloading your car know about them.

If you would like to read my last 3 posts they are available on our Fellowship website https://uufsc.com/index.php/border-justice-project/. It might give you ideas of other needed supplies.
To contribute financially go to Border Justice Donation, or you can mail checks made out to UUFSC (Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Silver City) with ‘Border’ in the memo line to UUFSC, PO Box 4034, Silver City, NM 88062
